Converting MP3 to WAV

MP3 is a compressed format made for small files. Many editors, samplers and DAWs prefer WAV, which they can read and re-export without decoding or further loss.

WAV is uncompressed, so editors and samplers read it straight away and every export starts from the same data. The cost is size: expect about 10 MB per minute at 44.1 kHz, 16-bit, stereo.

What WAV can't doConverting a compressed MP3 file to WAV can't bring back detail that compression already removed. You get a file that edits cleanly, not one that sounds better.

Questions people ask

Will converting MP3 to WAV improve the sound?
No. The WAV keeps exactly what the MP3 contains. It can't bring back detail the MP3 encoder removed. What you gain is a format that edits and re-exports without losing more.
Why is the WAV so much bigger than the MP3?
An MP3 stores a compressed version of the sound. A WAV stores every sample. A four-minute song is about 4 MB as a 128 kbps MP3 and about 40 MB as a 44.1 kHz, 16-bit stereo WAV.
Is the converter free?
Yes, within limits: 3 files a day, up to 100 MB each, with ads. You don't need an account.
Are my files private?
Converted files are deleted 1 hour after they are made. Nobody else can open your download link. Read the privacy page for how we handle files and logs.
Is it legal?
Only convert files you own or have permission to use. You are responsible for the files you add. Our guide on the legal side explains more.
Why did my MP3 conversion fail?
The most common causes are files over 100 MB, damaged files and files that aren't really MP3. Check the file opens on your device and try again.
