How WAV compression works
A WAV is uncompressed, so its size depends on three things: the sample rate, the bit depth and the number of channels. Lowering any of them makes the file smaller.
Going from 44.1 kHz stereo to 22.05 kHz mono cuts the size to about a quarter. That is fine for speech and notes, but music may lose brightness.
